Troy Ministers to University Choirs

Troy serves as Guest Clinician at annual Interdenominational Youth Choir Conference

Troy McIntosh served as the Guest Clinician for the Annual Interdenominational Youth Choir Conference at Illinois State University in Bloomington-Normal Illinois. The workshop hosted choirs from seven universities throughout the Midwest. Gospel Choirs were represented from:

  • Lewis University (Romeoville, IL)
  • Northern Illinois University
  • University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana
  • DePaul University
  • Lincoln University (Jefferson City, MO)
  • Illinois State University
  • Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville

On Friday evening, each choir sang two selections at a musical that extended into the late hours of the night. Saturday was spent learning music. In the early morning session, each choir director presented a song to the conference mass choir. In the afternoon, Troy spent time teaching the 250-voice ensemble a series of 6 songs, two of which were originals.

After a short break, the groups reassembled Saturday evening for a night of food, fun and fellowship. Participants broke into two large groups, one of which focused on fellowship, games and interaction. The second group engaged in an open question and answer format where controversial issues were discussed. Issues covered included questions such as “How should churches address homosexuality?”, “Should Christians be involved with Greek organizations (i.e., fraternities and sororities)?” and “How should Christian men treat Christian women?”  Students weighed in with their opinions and occasionally some biblical commentary was added.

The conference ended Sunday afternoon with a mass choir concert. The event was marked by excellent organization, timely schedules and creative ways of engaging students in a college setting.

When asked about the conference, one  participant shared, “[Troy] really brought these choirs to a higher level in God. I believe I can speak for everyone when I say that the presence of God was really in the concert on Sunday.” The experience was enjoyable for all -- both choirs and clinician.

The Interdenominational Youth Choir has been in existence at Illinois State University for more than 20 years. Past Guest Clinicians at the conference include national recording artists, Walt Whitman, Ricky Dillard, DeAndre Patterson, Percy Gray and

Malcom Williams. Currently the choir is under the Presidency of Delores Belogun and Directorship of Nate Thompson.
